What does it mean?
South Bermondsey North Livesey has been selected as a Neighbourhood Management Partnership under the government's Neighbourhood Management (NM) programme. This is a 7-year programme to help poorer areas catch up with better off ones, through improving local services and making the neighbourhood a better place to live
It is a new way of working in the neighbourhood based on a partnership between agencies and local communities to improve services at a very local neighbourhood level - ensuring local people have a say in what is needed, agreeing a plan for the area, and being part of making sure that the plan is kept to. By putting the needs and aspirations of local residents first it will tackle problems which local people see as crucial for the future of the area. This might include better management of the local environment, increasing community safety, improving healthcare and education, and encouraging economic growth in the neighbourhood. The key is that residents' concerns should be more important in defining what is done than agencies' assumptions about what should be done.
What area does it cover?
The neighbourhood is the whole of South Bermondsey ward and the North part of Livesey ward, north of the Old Kent Road.
How will it work?
It works by finding out what the local community wants and looking at how existing services meet - or don't meet - these needs. By focussing on better co-ordination of services and locally led solutions to problems, it will bring about better value for money, more efficient and more responsive services, which will lead to better lives for people in the neighbourhood.
A Board, made up of local residents and local service providers, will oversee the work. The Board will be supported by the new Neighbourhood Management team who act as the point of contact for residents and businesses and will have the clout to negotiate with providers about how services are delivered. By making sure there is someone taking overall responsibility at neighbourhood level, residents will get services that meet their needs.
