Promoting Community Cohesion In Southwark
The Southwark Alliance works closely with the community, local voluntary groups, and statutory agencies to promote community cohesion in the borough. We try to:-
- Ensure community participation includes those from different cultural backgrounds, different age groups and those who experience different levels of deprivation and exclusion.
- Develop a better understanding of the factors in each neighbourhood which act as barriers to people accessing opportunities , and find solutions to those barriers in partnership with local people.
- Identify the opportunities and challenges to create cohesive communities within and between neighbourhoods , and work with local people to improve understanding and celebrate diversity.
As well as supporting a number of community engagement and active citizenship activities, the Southwark Alliance has supported the production of a number of publications which give ideas and thoughts about promoting community cohesion in the borough. These include:
- Mark of Faith (pdf)
- A Sense of belonging (pdf)
- How to build community cohesion in Southwark (pdf)
- A State of Mind (pdf)
There is also a DVD which gives an overview of some of the work that has been done. For a copy of this, or copies of the publications, or for further please contact Southwark Council's community cohesion co-ordinator on 020-7525 0796.
