Southwark Sustainable Environment Partnership
The Southwark Sustainable Environment Partnership exists to promote the importance of a quality, liveable, sustainable environment for all who live in, work in and visit Southwark.
It develops and oversees the implementation of all environmental aspects of the Southwark Sustainable Community Strategy, including:
- energy and climate change
- waste management and recycling
- transport
- air quality
- water
- biodiversity
- the public realm (i.e. streets, parks and open spaces)
It coordinates the delivery arrangements for relevant Local Area Agreement indicators and targets, and monitors the effectiveness of the implementation of the environmental aspects of the Sustainable Community Strategy, including relevant Local Area Agreement indicators and targets.
The Southwark Sustainable Environment Partnership also promotes the importance of sustainability amongst other members of the Southwark Alliance, and the wider community of Southwark, including residents, businesses and voluntary and community organisations. It coordinates a range of services delivered through partner agencies, and identifies gaps in provision and developing proposals to address them. It also maximises funding coming into the borough for environmental services and acts as an information source for environmental organisations within the area.
How it Works
The Partnership is accountable to the Southwark Alliance. Any decision-making powers remain with the Southwark Alliance and it’s various member organisations unless these are expressly delegated. It works in conjunction with other thematic partnerships of the Southwark Alliance on matters of mutual concern and typically meets every two months.
An annual general meeting is held where The Chair of the Partnership is elected. The Chair serves for a period of two years and also serves on the Southwark Alliance Board.
The Partnership also establishes sub-groups where it is deemed necessary to undertake the above roles and tasks. Sub-groups are sometimes formed as ‘working groups’ to undertake specific activities and projects as decided at Partnership meetings. These sub-groups will sometimes include members from organisations which are not core members of the Partnership.
It typically holds at least one stakeholder event each year with wider interest groups.
